From Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Mann Randolph, 26 July 1795

To Thomas Mann Randolph

Monticello July 26. 95.

Dear Sir

Mr. Stuart having thought it best to associate a careful person at Staunton with James, they arrived here this morning with their sorrowful charge. They found here my sisters Bolling Carr and Marks. It is great consolation to us that your stay at Staunton had been so long as to render it impossible that the journey could have had any effect on the accident which happened. Anne and Jefferson are in high health. Mrs. Bolling is still afflicted with her rheumatism and her daughter and both servants are laid up with the fever and ague the consequence of their stay in Goochland. We all join in love to you both and trust you are looking forward with hope to the restoration of your own health and as early a return to us as is consistent with that. God bless you both. Yours affectionately

Th: Jefferson

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “Mr. Randolph”; endorsed by Randolph.

Sorrowful charge: TJ’s young granddaughter Ellen Wayles Randolph died at Staunton while traveling with her parents to Sweet Springs. A death date of 26 July 1795 is recorded among the memoranda about the family of Martha Jefferson Randolph and Thomas Mann Randolph that TJ entered in the family prayer book in 1803 or later (see illustration), but that was more likely the date she was buried at Monticello, being the same day TJ paid local schoolteacher Benjamin Snead two dollars for the reading of a service for her (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 1 Apr. 1769, 26 July 1795, 24 Sep. 1806, and notes).

A letter from Randolph to TJ of 23 July 1795, recorded in SJL as received from Staunton two days later, has not been found.
