Editors’ Translation

[received 1 Sept. 1820]

Most Illustrious Gentlemen Thomas Jefferson and General Cocke—

Your servants Michele and Giacomo Raggi hereby offer three compromise proposals, from which you may choose the one that seems most advantageous to you.

First. That the abovementioned Michele go immediately to the nearest European port in order to bring his wife here with him at his own expense, provided that his contract be renewed for five years and that, at the same time, the marble blocks be brought from either Philadelphia or Italy, as you prefer, because the aforesaid Raggis can no longer work these stones without endangering their health.

Second. Having heard that you would like to have this work done in Carrara marble, because working with it is better and faster, the undersigned Raggis offer to carry it out and cut the large Corinthian capitals for

the price of four hundred talers each, that is Trs 400
and the Ionic capitals for the price of one hundred and sixty talers each. 160

and to give them to you in Leghorn, finished well and boxed up, whenever you wish. In addition, if you like, we will also make the other Corinthian capitals, for which we will quote you the price once you have provided us with the measurements. We can assure you that no one else will give you a better deal than we can offer by doing the work with our own hands and the aid of a few of our relatives. You know very well, moreover, the fatigue, difficulty, and expense of the work entailed by these capitals, and thus you will be able to ascertain and understand that we have offered you a very fair price.

Third. If you do not wish to accept either of the aforesaid proposals, we offer to carry out this work on your behalf in Carrara, to do it as if we were under your eyes for no more than our current monetary compensation, and, out of this sum, to arrange for our own meals. We assure you that we will do everything in your best interest with regard to the cost of the marble and the other expenses arising out of this work, and as you gentlemen have many ways of knowing whether we are, at all times, promoting your interests, we submit ourselves to your will, declaring that we are,   Most illustrious gentlemen, your very humble, devoted servants
