Amsterdam, 11 May 1789. Acknowledge TJ’s letter of advice of 3 May concerning his draft in favor of Van Damme, “which shall be discharged on presentation,” and also TJ’s “Remittance ƒ237.6 on Messrs. Willinks and ourselves,” which they declared to be “exactly the Balance of your private account now closed.”

It is remarkable that Van Staphorst & Hubbard did not at this time discover the error in addition in TJ’s letter of 3 May 1789 which caused a discrepancy of 100 florins in his favor in his private account, but this was possibly because this account and that of the United States were intermingled. The firm later made the discovery and TJ rectified the error with an additional remittance, plus interest at 6 percent (Van Staphorst & Hubbard to TJ, 3 Sep. 1790; TJ to Van Staphorst & Hubbard, 11 May 1791).
