To Thomas Jefferson from Samuel Huntington, 18 April 1781

From Samuel Huntington

Philadelphia, 18 Apr. 1781. Encloses a resolution of Congress stating that Col. [William] Davies cannot “exercise a civil Appointment while he retains his Rank in the Army.” Postscript: “I have been honoured with your several Despatches of the 26, 28, and 31. of March and 7th. Instant.”

RC (CtY); in a clerk’s hand, signed by Huntington. Address leaf of RC is in Vi, franked by Huntington and endorsed: “Lre from Prest. of Congress enclosing Reson. of 16th of April 1781 respecting Colo Davies.” FC (DLC: PCC, No. 15). The enclosed resolution of Congress, 16 Apr. (printed in JCC description begins Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789, ed. W. C. Ford and others, Washington, 1904–1937 description ends , xix, 398), is the same as that enclosed in the letter from the Virginia delegates to TJ, 17 Apr. 1781, and the copy noted there may in fact have been the one enclosed in the present letter.
