davy: David Hern (1784–after 1829), the son of David Hern and Isabel Hern, was a wagoner, nailer, blacksmith, and charcoal burner at Monticello. During TJ’s presidency Hern brought his cart from Monticello to Washington twice a year, and he was part of the March 1809 wagon train that brought TJ’s baggage home. His wife, Fanny Gillette Hern, was one of TJ’s cooks (, 62–4).
