From Thomas Jefferson to Robert Smith, 14 May 1802

To Robert Smith

Monticello. May 14. 1802.

Th: Jefferson presents his friendly salutations to the Secretary of the navy and incloses him a letter from mr Page asking a furlough for a son of Genl. Spotswood. if it be within rule it is worth while to oblige the Genl. (tho’ a true federalist) as well as mr Page

PrC (DLC). Recorded in SJL with notation “furlough for Spotswood.” Enclosure: probably Mann Page to TJ, 9 May 1802, recorded in SJL as received from Mannsfield on 13 May, but not found.

SON OF GENL. SPOTSWOOD: probably George W. Spotswood, a midshipman in the navy since 1799. Smith had recently granted him permission to make a voyage to Europe (NDBW description begins Dudley W. Knox, ed., Naval Documents Related to the United States Wars with the Barbary Powers, Washington, D.C., 1939–44, 6 vols. and Register of Officer Personnel and Ships’ Data, 1801–1807, Washington, D.C., 1945 description ends , Register, 52; Smith to George W. Spotswood, 11 May 1802, Lb in DNA: RG 45, LSO).
