Buckmountain Church March 19. 1809.—

Dear Sir,

Albemarle Buckmountain Baptist Church, Sendeth Greeting to our much esteemed friend, Mr Thomas Jefferson.

We Congratulate you in your Return home, from your labour and painful Servis of eight years. now to take some Sweet hours of retirment and rest.—Injoying at pleasure the Company of your loveing Friends, and neighbours. not that We were werey, or Dissattisfied with your Conduct, but were wel pleased; for which Be pleas’d to accept of these our kind Thanks.—May your Days be many and Comfortable. in a word (may we say) we wish you health, wealth, and prosperity through life, And in the world to come life everlasting

MS (DLC); salutation below greeting; addressed: “Mr Thomas Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ as an “Address” of 17 Mar. 1809 received 9 Apr. 1809 and so recorded (with correct date) in SJL. Printed in Richmond Enquirer, 26 May 1809.

George Buford Twyman (1731–1818), an Albemarle farmer and longtime acquaintance of TJ, was an original member of the Albemarle Baptist Church of Christ, serving as moderator and record keeper from its organization in 1773 until 1811. The name of the church was changed to Buckmountain Baptist Church in 1801, when the congregation took possession of the church by that name formerly occupied by Episcopalians (1811 autobiography, George Twyman Papers, and Chesnut Grove Baptist Church Records, 1773–1970, both in ViU; MB description begins James A.
