Sir

I have the honour to transmit your Excellency the enclosed Acts of Congress of the 17th and 19th Instant pointing out the Measures they deem necessary to be taken, for the Support of the southern Army.

I make no Doubt the State of Virginia will avail itself of its numerous and spirited Militia, as well as great resources, at this important Crisis, when her own immediate Interest is so intimately connected with that of the Union.

Enclosures (also Vi): (1) attested copy of resolutions of Congress of 17 June, calling (among other things) for the executive of Virginia to order 5,000 militia to join the southern army at once; endorsed: “resolve of Congress providg for the Southern defence rec’d July 80”; (2) attested copy of resolution of Congress recommending that Virginia and North Carolina recruit, mount, and equip Baylor’s and White’s regiments of light dragoons to the number of 150 rank and file per regiment, endorsed: “resolve of Congress for equiping remountg Dragoons. 1780 June 19th.” The resolutions are printed in JCC description begins Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789, ed. W. C. Ford and others, Washington, 1904–1937 description ends , xvii, 523–4, 527–8. An order of Congress of 16 June (attested copy in Vi; printed JCC description begins Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789, ed. W. C. Ford and others, Washington, 1904–1937 description ends , xvii, 518–19), instructing Brig. Gen. Weedon and Col. Daniel Morgan to place themselves under Gates’ command in the South, was transmitted to TJ in a letter (perhaps from the Virginia Delegates in Congress) of about this date which has not been found.
