From Samuel Huntington

Philadelphia, 5 June 1780. Encloses a resolve of Congress and asks that orders for executing it be carried out.

FC (DLC: PCC, No. 15); 1 p. Caption reads “To Governor Lee,” but at foot of text is the notation “The like verbatim to Gov Jefferson.” Enclosure (Vi); see below.

The resolve enclosed was one adopted by Congress on the day this letter was written (see JCC description begins Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789, ed. W. C. Ford and others, Washington, 1904–1937 description ends , xvii, 489) and reads as follows in the copy attested by Charles Thomson and sent to TJ: “That the Governors of the States of Virginia and Maryland be requested immediately to engage trusty persons in those States respectively at proper distances from each other on the main road from Cape Henry in Virginia to Philadelphia to hold themselves in readiness should the french fleet be discovered off that Cape or the Adjacent Coast to forward intelligence thereof, and any dispatches that may be received from them to Congress in the most expeditious manner.”
