July 26th 1793.

Mr. Hamilton presents his Compliments to Mr. Jefferson And has the honor of sending him, herewith, the Copies of two letters from the Commissioner of Loans for Virginia on the subject of Mr. Short’s Stock.

RC (DLC: William Short Papers); in a clerk’s hand; endorsed by TJ as received 27 July 1793 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosures: (1) John Hopkins to Hamilton, 29 Apr. 1793, reporting that stock held in James Brown’s name in trust for William Short has been transferred to Short as Brown requested this day, answering the object of TJ’s letter to Hamilton of 19 Apr. (2) Hopkins to Hamilton, 16 July 1793, enclosing a duplicate of No. 1, reporting that Short’s holdings of stock now consist of $15,008 in 6 percent assumed debt, $11,256 in 3 percent assumed debt, $7,504 in deferred debt, and $1,093 in 6 percent public debt, and indicating that no transfers of this stock had taken place while Brown held it in trust (Trs in same; conjoined; printed in Syrett, Hamilton description begins Harold C.
