Will you be good enough to let me see the recommendations for the enclosed nominations? If my memory serves me right, the two last were recommended by Crowningshield. The name of the new collector of Portland I never heard before—

enclosed nominations: Uriah Tracy sought the recommendations for Isaac Ilsley, Zachariah Stevens, and Joseph Story, all 2 Feb. nominations to replace customs officers at Massachusetts ports. Their nominations were among those postponed by the Senate and referred to a committee headed by Tracy (see TJ to the Senate, 2 Feb.). Robert Wright of Maryland was the only Republican on the committee ().
