To Thomas Jefferson from Albert Gallatin, 9 February 1803

From Albert Gallatin

[9 Feb. 1803]

Dear Sir

Will you be good enough to let me see the recommendations for the enclosed nominations? If my memory serves me right, the two last were recommended by Crowningshield. The name of the new collector of Portland I never heard before—

With respect Your affecte. Servt.

Albert Gallatin

NB. I do not intend answering Tracy, as I think the request from a committee to a head of dept improper, but will communicate to our friends

RC (DLC); endorsed by TJ as received from the Treasury Department on 9 Feb. and “nominations” and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not found, but see below.

enclosed nominations: Uriah Tracy sought the recommendations for Isaac Ilsley, Zachariah Stevens, and Joseph Story, all 2 Feb. nominations to replace customs officers at Massachusetts ports. Their nominations were among those postponed by the Senate and referred to a committee headed by Tracy (see TJ to the Senate, 2 Feb.). Robert Wright of Maryland was the only Republican on the committee (Biog. Dir. Cong. description begins Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774-1989, Washington, D.C., 1989 description ends ).
