Thomas Jefferson to George Jefferson, 25 March 1809

To George Jefferson

Monticello Mar. 25. 09.

Dear Sir

My letter by post yesterday desired you to send my goods from Washington by trusty boatmen. I did not then know that mr Randolph’s boats would go off to-day. as they are entirely trusty, I pray you to deliver to them whatever you may have for me. the molasses particularly will come safe by them. we are entirely unable to get cotton seed in this part of the country. mr Bacon at my request wrote to you for some. if you have or can procure it, it will be rendering me a great service.

Your’s affectionately

Th: Jefferson

SC (MHi); at foot of text: “Mr George Jefferson”; endorsed by TJ.

A list of expenses incurred by Edmund bacon between December 1808 and March 1809, ending with the sale by Nicholas Giannini of two thousand pounds of fodder for $11.67 payable on 15 Mar. 1809 (MS in CSmH: JF; entirely in TJ’s hand; undated; at head of text: “E. Bacon’s debts from Dec. 10. 08—to Mar. 15. 09”), confirms that in his capacity as Monticello overseer, Bacon regularly purchased corn, beef, fodder, and livestock for TJ’s plantation. TJ reimbursed Bacon for these purchases on 6 Dec. 1808 and 8 and 23 Jan. 1809 (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1236, 1238, 1239).
