From John Jay to Montmorin, 10 March 1781

To Montmorin

[Madrid March 10—1781.]

Mr Jay presents his Compts to his Exy the Count De Momorin and has the honor of informing him that in pursuance of the Advice he was yesterday so kind as to give him, he has turned ^his attention^ to the Letter proposed—but tho he sees the wisdom and policy of it, yet ^but y^ he finds that the Execution of it demands so much ^it should be written with^ ^so much will depend on the D depend on the^ Delicacy and pro caution ^with which it may be written^ that he dares not attempt to compleat it in so short a Time as by Tomorrow noon—He Mr Jay therefore thinks it most prudent to defer it to a future opportunity ^Courier^, and in the mean Time endeavour to render it as ^to^ perfect ^it^ as possible & to which which he will be the better enabled to as he may then have opportunities of consulting his Excellency ^deriving such further aid^ [from] his Excellencys advice ^by mature Ref Deliberation^ by occasionally availing himself of ^deriving aid from^ the same sagacity and Experience to which is already indebted for the outlines of the Plan1
