From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 22 March 1813

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford 22 March 1813

Dear Peter

I have recd. your Letter of the 19th. Inst:—1 Care must be taken to make adequate Provision for my Expenses here, which are not inconsiderable— when the monies payable to Sr. James, and to Nicholl, are deducted, the Ballance remaining will not be great—

Mr Felch2 lately wrote a Letter to the Vestry signifying that he could not continue in their Service for less than $500 a Year— They unanimously assented to his leaving them on the first of next month, and have already leased the Glebe— Altho it was agreed that Felch should find his own wood; he has cut about 70 fine young oaks— this has caused much Displeasure, and together with his usual Indiscretions, leaves no Reason to regret his Departure— The Interest of the church here has been injured both by him and Streebeck.—3 Where Felch purposes to go, or what are his Expectations we do not know, and perhaps he does not.

I hope you have been to Rye, and without Injury to your Health— your visits there being always acceptable, should be frequent. as to your coming here, I think it should be postponed until the Roads and the weather become more favorable than they will probably be for many weeks to come—

A few Cases of Fever still occur, but it rarely proves mortal; so that we have great Reason to be thankful— As to Health— we all continue in “Statu quo”— our Love to Mary I am Dear Peter Your affte. Father

John Jay
