From John Jay to Maria Jay Banyer, 14 June 1815

To Maria Jay Banyer

Bedford 14 June 1815

My dear Maria

Sally is still here and quite as well as when she came; so that her Jaunt to NYork has been postponed, and we have not as yet concluded when it shall take place. On Saturday she recd. a Letter from you; from which it appears that you had recd. mine which contained certain Hints in the Propriety of which you agree in opinion with me.1 Whether it would be adviseable to make the Propositions alluded to in yours to Sally, is a question which deserves Consideration— It appears to me best that you should continue silent on the Subject for the present—and that such an overture should be delayed until circumstances shall make it expedient— We know not what will come to pass this month nor this Year— The most generous Propositions are sometimes misinterpreted— make them when the proper Season arrives—that is, when they shall have become clearly and evidently adviseable, and rendered so by Difficulties not to be removed otherwise—

The Marquis is indeed much to be pitied; and yet, he may have Reason to rejoice in the End for the Days wherein he has seen Adversity. We are incompetent Judges of what is really best for us; and it is a Consolation to reflect that all Events are under the absolute Controul of perfect Wisdom and Goodness— There seems to be Reason to apprehend that Europe will again be a Scene of dre^a^dful Disasters— How far may affect us is not to be foreseen—

Nancy & myself continue as well as usual— Wm. will go to Bloomingdale soon, and expects to return with Augusta next week. The weather here continues unseasonably cool— our Peach Trees &ca. have suffered from Frost— we have had but one warm or summer Day this Month. I am my dear Maria your very affte. Father

John Jay
