Thomas Tillotson Esquire having been appointed by The Superintendant of Finance to succeed me in the Office of the Receiver of The Continental Taxes within this State I do hereby assign to him the foregoing warrant to do whatsoever in virtue thereof I the underwritten am authorised to do.

1. The letter in which H submitted his resignation to Robert Morris has not been found. On September 5, 1782, Morris wrote to Thomas Tillotson: “Colo. Hamilton having resigned the Office of Receiver for your State I take the Liberty to make you an Offer of it. Colo. Hamilton will be able and willing to give you every necessary Information as to the Duties and Emoluments of that Office. I shall be happy to hear from you as soon as may be convenient” (Robert Morris Papers, Library of Congress). H’s resignation probably was effective October 31, for his appointment as delegate to the Continental Congress was effective November 4. The Robert Morris Papers do not, however, reveal the exact date of H’s resignation.
This assignment of warrant was added by H to the “Warrant to Alexander Hamilton to Receive Money as Continental Receiver for the State of New York,” April 15, 1782. See enclosure in Morris to H, April 15, 1782.
