1Hamilton wrote GW again from Trenton on 17 Oct. before returning to New York on 19 Oct. : “I have the honor to transmit for your information An Abstract of the recruiting returns which were received at the Adjutant Generals office to the 5th of October last inclusively. From subsequent informal communications, I am authorised to say that the numbers now actually inlisted considerably exceed those which appear in the Return” (DLC:GW). The abstracts enclosed in the two letters have not been found. Neither of these letters is listed in the Syrett edition of the Hamilton Papers.
