N Y. April 18th 1800

Sir

Enclosed is a letter from Captain Ashmun requesting permission of absence.1 Applications of the kind should always come thro’ the commanding officer accompanied with his opinion.2 You are at libery to grant Captain Ashmun a furlough till some time in May.
