To George Washington from Alexander Hamilton, 17 April 1794

Treasy Dept. April 17. 1794.

The Secy of the Treasury presents his respects to the President of the U.S. & encloses herewith the draft of a Passport, requested by mister Hammond for a vessel intended by him to be dispatched to Halifax, and which the Secretary understood from the Secy of State was to be granted by the President.1

1. For the request for a passport by British minister George Hammond “for the sole purpose of conveying to Halifax [Nova Scotia] a messenger, who will be charged with my dispatches,” see his letter to Edmund Randolph of 29 March (RG 59, Notes from the British Legation). Randolph submitted Hammond’s letter to Hamilton with a cover letter of 16 April (Hamilton Papers description begins Harold C. Syrett et al., eds. The Papers of Alexander Hamilton. 27 vols. New York, 1961–87. description ends , 16:291–92). The enclosed passport has not been identified, but it probably was for the schooner Margery, which sailed from New York “with the Mail, for Halifax,” on 20 April (Daily Advertiser [New York], 21 April).
