From George Washington to Alexander Hamilton, 19 March 1791

To Alexander Hamilton

[Philadelphia, 19 March 1791]

Pay or cause to be paid to the Secretary of State Forty thousand Dollars to be applied to the purposes of the Act, entitled “An Act providing the means of Intercourse between the United States and foreign Nations” for which this shall be your warrant.1 Given under my hand at Philadelphia the nineteenth day of March, in the year one thousand seven hundred & ninety one.

1. Under the provisions of this act (1 Stat. description begins Richard Peters, ed. The Public Statutes at Large of the United States of America, from the Organization of the Government in 1789, to March 3, 1845 . . .. 8 vols. Boston, 1845-67. description ends 128–29 [1 July 1790]), Congress appropriated $40,000 annually for the support of the diplomatic service.
