To George Washington from Alexander Hamilton, 5 August 1790

From Alexander Hamilton

Treasury Department [New York], 5 Aug. 1790. Submits a contract1 made by William Allibone, superintendent of the lighthouse on the Delaware River, with Thomas McHam and observes that the terms of the agreement appear advantageous to the United States.2

1House carpenter Thomas McHam of Sussex County, Del., contracted on 29 June 1790 to erect timber breastworks for securing the foundation of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse and to shingle the house and its kitchen and storehouse before 10 Nov. 1790 for payment of £90 Pennsylvana currency (DNA: RG 26, Lighthouse Deeds and Contracts, 1790–1812).

2Tobias Lear replied to Hamilton on 24 Aug. 1790 that the president approved of the contract (DLC:GW).
