Sir,
Pursuant to an order of the House of Representatives of the 8th of May last,2 I have the honor to transmit a general state of the Revenue on stills and spirits distilled within the United States, exhibiting the several particulars indicated by the said order, so far as returns have been received at the Treasury;3 to which I beg leave to add, the Copy of a letter of yesterday from the Commissioner of the Revenue, transmitting the same to me.4

On May 8, 1792, the House “Resolved, That the Secretary of the Treasury report to this House, as early in the next session as may be practicable, the number and capacity of the stills in the respective districts and States; the nett product of revenue of the respective districts and States, particularizing the drawbacks, and distinguishing foreign from American materials, and the product paid by the gallon, month, and year; also, the number of officers and the amount of their salaries” (, 604).
