1Miranda, Spanish-American adventurer and soldier, served with the French during the American Revolution. After the war, when his attempts to achieve the independence of Spanish America were discovered, he fled first to the United States and then to England.

Miranda was in New York from January to July, 1784 (Robertson, The Life of Miranda description begins William S. Robertson, The Life of Miranda (Chapel Hill, 1929). description ends , I, 40–46). This letter must have been written during that time.
