From George Washington to Colonel David Hall, 31 August 1779

To Colonel David Hall

Hd Qrs [West Point] Aug. 31 1779

Sir

This will be transmitted you by Genl Greene, who has my directions to give you his respecting the repair of the back road, from Sussex to New Windsor,1 As it is much out of repair, and the route by which we get our supplies I must request your particular attention to it, and that you will not suffer the work to be slighted, but have it done in the most effectual manner. When this business is accomplished you will join your Brigade as directed in my letter of the 28th. I am &c.

G. W——n

Df, in Richard Kidder Meade’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. The draft is addressed to “Col. D. Hall or Officer Commanding Delaware Battalion.” GW apparently enclosed the LS, which has not been found, with his first letter of this date to Nathanael Greene.

For GW’s subsequent modification of these orders, see the source note to GW’s second letter to Stirling of 1 September.

1See GW to Greene, this date (first letter). GW is referring to the main army’s supply road, which ran from Sussex, N.J., through Goshen and Chester, N.Y., to New Windsor, N.Y. (see Map 7).
