I have appointed the bearer hereof, Mr. William Short, my Secretary. His salary as such will be the same which young Mr. Franklin received. I am therefore to ask the favor of you to pay it to him from time to time as it shall become due, and to debit the United States therewith. I have the honor to be with very great respect, Sir your most obedient and most humble servt.,

PrC (DNA: PCC, No. 87, i); the month “Sep.” is written in TJ’s hand over the original date, “July.” Another PrC (DLC: TJ Papers); without the correction in date and lacking part of the complimentary close and signature; follows on the same page the PrC of TJ to Short of this date. Tr (DNA: PCC, No. 107, i). Entry in SJPL reads: “Grand. Notification.” A copy was later enclosed in TJ to John Jay, 6 Oct. 1785.
