§ From Charles W. Goldsborough
8 November 1811. Conveys information that two pipes of the wine ordered by JM have been shipped, as JM requested, from Baltimore to JM’s agent in Fredericksburg.1 Three pipes of wine, as well as that ordered for Mrs. Washington, have been shipped to him, and he will immediately send them to JM’s house unless directed otherwise. Encloses a paper showing the duties, freight, and other charges on the six pipes, which amount to $435.43, or $72.57 1/6 per pipe. These charges were paid at Baltimore. Adds in a postscript that all pipes are cased.

Enclosures are a letter from John Stricker to Goldsborough, 5 Nov. 1811 (1 p.), forwarding a note from Isaac Stilley, 5 Nov. 1811 (1 p.), acknowledging the receipt from Stricker of four pipes of wine for JM and undertaking to deliver it to Goldsborough, and Stricker’s account dated November 1811 (1 p.; dated 18 Sept. 1811 in the Index to the James Madison Papers) totaling $435.43 for freight, cooperage, and drayage for the six pipes of wine he had received at Baltimore. A receipt dated 20 Nov. 1811 (DLC) indicates that Stilley was paid $10.36 for wharfage and freight charges from Baltimore on JM’s wine.
