From Alexander Hamilton to Samuel R. Gerry, [3 September 1790]

[Treasury Department, September 3, 1790. The description of this letter in the dealer’s catalogue reads: “Interesting letter to the newly appointed Collector of Customs at Marblehead (Massachusetts) enclosing a communication for the former incumbent of that office, Mr. Burrell Devereux,2 which will enable Gerry ‘to receive every thing in his hands relative to the duties of your office.’” Letter not found.]

2Gerry replaced Richard Harris, who had been appointed on August 3, 1789, and had died in office. Devereux was never appointed to the position and apparently performed the duties of the office on a temporary basis until Gerry’s appointment on August 3, 1790. See Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America (Washington, 1828), I. description ends , 12, 53–54.

No letter from H to Devereux has been found.
