8. Dated on the basis of BF’s letter to Anne Ogle, May 24.
9. Edward Newenham had written a year earlier that he and his wife intended to visit Paris: XXXIV, 417. On July 13, below, he wrote that their journey was imminent; they were only waiting for passports to arrive. Newenham there implies that BF had sent one that had miscarried. We have no trace of either the passport or the letter requesting it. This response from Vergennes is our only indication that BF had discussed the matter with the French ministry.
