8D’Ussieux’s term as second secretary of the Neuf Soeurs masonic lodge began in the second year of BF’s vénéralat: XXXII, 331n.

9La Respectable Loge des Neuf Soeurs … De l’année de la Vérité 5780. The masonic year began on March 1.

1In 1780 there appears to have been a general defection of musicians from the Neuf Soeurs: of nineteen musician members in 1778–1779 only three maintained their membership. Whatever measures were taken at the July 3 meeting, it was not until March 19, 1781, that another musician was affiliated with the lodge; see d’Ussieux’s invitation for March 19, 1781 (APS). For the list of musician members in 1779 see Louis Amiable, Une Loge maçonnique d’avant 1789 (Paris, 1897), p. 339; for the length of their memberships see Le Bihan, Francs-maçons parisiens, under the names given in Amiable.

2BF’s invitation for the fête, July 31, announces a reception for the candidate Choffar, readings, a concert, and a banquet. APS. Pierre-Philippe Choffard (1730–1809) was a draughtsman and engraver: DBF; Le Bihan, Francs-maçons parisiens.

During the period covered by this volume BF received two more printed invitations. The first was for a meeting on Aug. 28, at which emblems and legends were to be chosen for lodge tokens. The second one, for “Lundy 18 du présent mois” of 1780, either September or December, announced a concert and banquet to which BF was “Spécialement invité à vous y trouver.” The new meeting place was at “lhotel de Bullion par la ruë Coqueron [Coq-héron].”

3Par les noms connus des frères maçons votre très humble.
