From Benjamin Franklin to Silas Deane, 3 July 1777

To Silas Deane

ALS: Connecticut Historical Society

Passy, July 3. 1777.

Dear Sir

I have just received the inclos’d from St. Malo, which I send for your Consideration, and as Capt. Wickes will want Credit there, perhaps it may be well to accept the Offers of these Gentlemen. I shall be satisfy’d perfectly with what you may think proper to do on the Occasion.9 I am, with great Esteem, Your most obedient humble Servt.

B Franklin

Honble Silas Deane Esqr

Endorsed: Dr. Franklin

Notation: Dr. Franklin

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

9The enclosure, from Desegray, Beaugeard fils, has disappeared. It must have offered help in getting Wickes’s and Nicholson’s ships ready for sea. The commissioners’ acceptance has also been lost; it went express on the 11th, and was acknowledged in the firm’s letter below, July 14.
