[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

9The earliest possible year, though the note could also have been written in 1785. Lafayette’s former aide Gouvion (XXIII, 160–1n) was in America on March 27 from 1777 through 1781 (XXXVI, 527) and again in 1783. The year 1782 is impossible, as Lafayette was not in Paris on that date: Idzerda, Lafayette Papers, V, 25, 116n; Morris Papers, VIII, 646n.
