Leeds 24 Feb 1769.

Dear Sir

I sincerely ask your pardon for the trouble I gave you with my last. The dedication was written, and sent to you, before I had taken time to reflect upon it.4 I shall confine myself to the inscription I first proposed, and shall be obliged to you if you will throw the dedication into the fire without showing it to any person whatever. I am, Dear Sir your most obliged humble Servant

4. Of Priestley’s earlier letter only the concluding lines survive, as noted above under Feb. 14. Among his many publications in 1769 we have been unable to locate any that contains an “inscription,” let alone a dedication, with which BF might have been concerned. We therefore have no idea what Priestley was talking about.
