Receiv’d of Benjamin Franklin, Esqr; the Sum of Forty Pounds, to be accounted for to the Province of Pennsylvania.7

7BF recorded in his accounts that the £40 was “to be employ’d in Feeing Council and other Expences on Smith’s Petition.” “Account of Expences,” p. 14; PMHB, LV (1931), 109. The receipt is in WF’s hand except for the signature. See above, V, 11 n, for Richard Partridge, Pa. Assembly agent, and below, pp. 28, 31–40, for William Smith’s petition.

8In BF’s hand. Another receipt at Hist. Soc. Pa. shows that Partridge received £30 more on May 2, 1758, “on account of the charges relating to Wm. Smiths Appeal against the Pennsylvania Assembly.” This payment is recorded in the MS “Account of Expences,” p. 31, but was omitted from the printed version, PMHB, LV (1931), 97–133.
