Mr. Adams & Mr. Dana present their most respectful Complaments to his Excellency Dr. Franklin and wou’d acquaint him that as Mr. Adams had invited Company to dine with him on Sunday next, previous to his Excellency’s invitation, to dine with him on that Day, they cannot do themselves the honor of waiting upon him.

4The first Friday after the Adams party arrived in Paris. JA and his secretary Francis Dana spent Feb. 10, the day after their arrival, with BF at Passy and the following day he took them to meet with Vergennes, Sartine, and Maurepas at Versailles: Butterfield, John Adams Diary, IV, 241. After almost six unproductive months in Paris, JA left the city for the Netherlands on July 27 (Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 442); Dana, who stayed behind, was selected by Congress for a diplomatic mission to Russia and went to St. Petersburg in 1781: DAB.
