The American Commissioners to Jonathan Williams, Jr.: Two Notes, 10 July 1778

The American Commissioners to Jonathan Williams, Jr.: Two Notes

ALS (draft): Massachusetts Historical Society; incomplete draft: American Philosophical Society; two copies: National Archives9

I.

Passy July 10. 1778.

Mr. Williams

We approve of the Directions given by you to stop the Reparation of the Arms at Nantes paying the Workmen their Wages, Gratifications and Conduct money according to agreement of which you inform us in your Letter July 3 1778.

Arthur Lee
John Adams

II.

Passy July 10. 1778.

Mr. Williams is desired to send the Commissioners an order for the Goods remaining on hand, including the sixty three Barrels of Beef, to be delivered to Mr. J.D. Schweighauser of Nantes or to his order.1

Arthur Lee
John Adams

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

9The ALS draft is in Arthur Lee’s hand. The incomplete draft of (I), written on the verso of JW’s letter of July 3 (see the annotation of that letter), is in the hand of JA, as is one of the copies. BF’s signature does not appear on these documents, but we have no reason to suspect that he refused to sign.

1Presumably in response to Whipple’s offer, in his letter of July 2, to take arms and stores that JW had on hand.
