Pour Celebrer LIndependance il faut etre Independant Et la mauvaise Etoille de Mr. Grand ne lui permet pas de l’etre, par des Engagemens pour ce jour la, qu’il ne lui est pas possible de rompre. Il prie monsieur Le Docteur Franklin, d’en agreer touts ses regrets, Et d’etre persuadé qu’il ne la Celebrera pas moins, in petto.

4. 1779 is the earliest possible year. There was, so far as we know, no public celebration in France of American Independence Day in 1777 and Grand, the commissioners’ banker, did attend their party in 1778: Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 317. In late June, 1779, BF sent out printed invitations to Independence Day festivities to be held on Monday, July 5: XXIX, 726–7.
