Sir

A Note drawn by Wilson C Nicholas Esqr for $10.000 and endorsed by you, dated 18h August last past, payable this day at the Office of Discount and Deposit of the Bank of the United States at this place, was delivered to me by the President, Directors & Co of said Bank for protest

The president of the Richmond branch of the Second Bank of the United States was Richard Anderson. On this day Crump sent Wilson Cary Nicholas a similar notification of protest (RC in ViU: Nicholas Papers); addressed: “Wilson C. Nicholas Esqr Warren Albemarle”; stamped; postmarked Richmond, 21 Oct.; endorsed by Nicholas).

Joseph Marx assured Nicholas from Richmond on 28 Oct. 1820 that “Believe me I was fully alive to the unpleasant feelings it might cause You, to have Your Note to Mr J under Protests again; I hesitate not to say, that the painfull sensation it might cause that venerable Sage, added to my distress, but such was the situation of matters, the difficulty of indulgence encreased by the Report then here, of Mr J’s critical situation, suffered past hopes, the Bank could not deviate from the rules, the Bond You know was returned to Mr J, owing to some informality, Mr Dandridge receivd a letter from Mr Jefferson within a few days, wherein he informs him that the Bond should be returned & the other papers executed in the way the Lawyers here pointed out—Therefore that business will not hereafter occasion any uneasiness to You” (RC in ViU: Nicholas Papers).
