Sir

Annexed you will find the Prospectus of the contemplated practical treatise on Brewing Malting1 & Tanning which will Probably be ready for delivery in three weeks from this day. If you will be Kind enough to give me the name of your Bookseller at Washington I will take care that some Copy[s] be sent on to him for you and you[r] fr[iends] to whom I request you will h[ave] the goodness to recommend this little work[.] Assuring you I have used my best endeavour to make it generally useful, and I trust on perusal you will find it so—

RC (DLC); mutilated at seal; addressed: “The HonobleThomas JeffersonMonté CelloVerginia”; stamp canceled; franked; postmarked New York, 16 Sept.; endorsed by TJ as received 3 Oct. 1815 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure: prospectus for Coppinger, The American Practical Brewer and Tanner, noting that the author has twenty-five years of experience in brewing and malting; asserting that the work, which will cost $2.25 and include three illustrations, will be useful to gentlemen, merchants, farmers, brewers, and tanners; stating that “an extensive use of malt liquors is the natural, and, perhaps, the only, effectual remedy to the too great consumption of ardent spirits”; describing the tanning sections as “given from the Academy of Arts and Sciences at Paris”; indicating that improved methods will speed the process of tanning “Soal Leather” from at least twelve months to just twenty-one days, while calf skins can be tanned in three or four days rather than six to eight months, with corresponding increases in the return on capital; promising that the volume will include “the whole process of brewing Porter, Pale Ale, Table Beer, &c., of the best quality”; and concluding with a table of contents and a place to inscribe the name, residence, and number of copies ordered by subscribers (undated broadside in DLC: TJ Papers, 204:36436).
