To Thomas Cooper

Monticello Mar. 24. 20.

Sir

On the 13th inst. I gave to mr Coffee a letter of introduction to you. a few days after his departure the inclosed came to my hands, with which I can do nothing better than give it the protection of your cover as he will probably be with you when it gets to your hand.

affectionately yours

Th: Jefferson

PoC (ViU: TJP); on portion of a reused address cover to TJ, the other half of which was reused for PoC of TJ to Patrick Gibson, 24 Mar. 1820; at foot of text: “Dr Cooper”; endorsed by TJ. Recorded in SJL with parenthetical notation: “letter to Coffee.” Enclosure not found.

Although TJ had also written Cooper on the 13th inst., his letter introducing William J. Coffee was dated 17 Mar. 1820.
