To Benjamin Franklin from Peter Collinson, [27 May? 1756]

From Peter Collinson

Extract: Yale University Library

London 1757 [May 27, 1756?]6

I have the pleasure to tell thee how much thou art esteemed by many worthy men here: for on the Ballot for thy Election to be a Member of the Royal Society, there was not one negative Ball; an Instance of Unanimity that Lord Macclesfield told me he never before saw. So I wish thee long to enjoy that Honor deservedly and so unanimously conferred on thee. Thy Diploma will be sent when ready.

6Though dated 1757 by Ezra Stiles, who made it, this extract may well be from Collinson’s letter of May 27, 1756, the earliest of several which BF acknowledged on November 5 (see next volume) and the first Collinson is known to have written after BF’s election to the Royal Society, April 29, 1756 (see above, p. 375). Ten years later BF had forgotten the circumstances of his election and on searching the Society’s minutes was gratified to find it had been unanimous. BF to William Franklin, Dec. 19, 1767.
