From James Madison to William C. C. Claiborne, [ca. 15 September] 1812

To William C. C. Claiborne

[ca. 15 September 1812]

Dear Sir

I have reecived [sic] your favor of the 2 Ulto. and very sincerely congratulate you on the high proof given you of the Confidence & affection of your fellow Citizens of Louisiana. The event is important in several political views, as well as gratifying to your personal friends. To myself it is a source of unfeigned pleasure.

I say nothing on public affairs: because I could say nothing which will not reach you with more certainty, & probably in less time than this letter, through printed vihitcles [sic]. Accept my sincere esteem & friendly regards.

Signed   James Madison

Printed copy (Rowland, Claiborne Letter Books description begins Dunbar Rowland, ed., Official Letter Books of W. C. C. Claiborne, 1801–1816 (6 vols.; Jackson, Miss., 1917). description ends , 6:191–92). Undated; date assigned here on the assumption that Claiborne’s 2 Aug. 1812 letter arrived in Washington approximately a month after it was sent. At that time JM was at Montpelier and probably did not answer the letter until after his return on 14 Sept. JM’s letter was entered into Claiborne’s letterbook between 13 and 16 Oct., suggesting that it was sent from Washington approximately a month before.
