Dep: of State Sepr 7th 1802.

Daniel Brent respectfully informs the President that the Secy of War has intimated, a Commission for Joseph Story, as a Commr of Bankruptcy in Massachusetts, is wanted—A Blank Commission for the President & Secy of State’s signatures is accordingly herewith sent.   Danl Brent begs leave further to signify to the President, that a Parcel of Blank Commissions of the same kind were forwarded to him from this office some time ago for his signature, and that they are not yet returned.

RC (DLC); endorsed by TJ as received from the State Department on 9 Sep. and “blank commns. bkrptcy” and so recorded in SJL; also endorsed by TJ: “Commn. for Storer.” Enclosure not found.

COMMISSION FOR JOSEPH STORY: on his list of appointments, TJ entered Story’s designation as bankruptcy commissioner at 10 Sep. (see Appendix i). For the Secretary of War’s efforts to have Joseph Story appointed in place of Isaac Story, see Dearborn to TJ, 31 July and 10 Aug. 1802. According to SJL, on 31 Aug. TJ wrote Dearborn regarding “Storer’s commn bkrptcy,” but the letter has not been found.
