From George Washington to the Board of War, 28 February 1779
To the Board of War
Head Quarters [Middlebrook] 28th feby 1779.
Gentlemen.
I have received the letters which you did me the honor to write the 22d & 23d inst.1 In consequence of the first—I have written to Col. Bland appointing him to the command at Charlotteville—and inclosing the Resolve of Congress relative to the general superintendence of the Governor and Council of Virginia—for his direction2—As Col. Bland in my opinion answers the description of the Officer which you think that duty requires—and has already had some acquaintance with the Conventioners—I have every reason to hope that he will give satisfaction.
I have received from the Boards pay Master Specie equal in value to £375 Currency—for which I transmit duplicate Receipts as he desires.3 I have the honor to be &c.

1. GW is referring to Richard Peters’s letter to him of 22 Feb., and possibly also to Peter Scull’s letter to him of that date, both of which were written on behalf of the Board of War. No letter of 23 Feb. to GW from the Board of War or anyone writing on its behalf has been found.

3. Congress had appropriated this money for secret service on 22 Feb. (see John Jay to GW, 23 Feb., and n.2 to that document). The enclosed receipts have not been identified. Joseph Carleton (c.1754–1812), a merchant from Alexandria, Va., was paymaster to the Board of War.
