From Benjamin Franklin to Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg, 23 April 1773

To Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg

Translated extract: printed in Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg, ed., Œuvres de M. Franklin … (2 vols., Paris, 1773), II, 313.3

Londres, 23 Avril 1773.

3An English retranslation may be found in Sparks, Works, V, 288 n.

4The idea that pokeweed was efficacious against cancer was an old one; see above, BF to Dubourg, March 27, and Dubourg’s query of April 11. If he received and read correctly the “papier cijoint” (which we are unable to identify) he must have been right in assuming that Daniel Solander, the famous botanist, had lent the authority of his name to the remedy. But BF’s sentence in itself could mean only that Solander had classified pokeweed.
