The American Commissioners to John Paul Jones6

AL (draft): Massachusetts Historical Society; copies: Library of Congress, National Archives (two)

<Passy, June 10, 1778: Please send us a return of your prisoners, with ranks and names,7 for an exchange proposed by the British court. We have your account of the disagreement among your crew, and will shortly give you our opinion.>

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

6Published in Butterfield, John Adams Diary, IV, 135; for the context see Taylor, Adams Papers, VI, 197–8.

7Two such lists, undated, are in the Hist. Soc. of Pa. Library. One gives the names and ranks of 133 officers and crew of the Drake; the other lists 145 by name only: those on the Drake, with some discrepancies, and on other prizes. An undated summary of the figures, in Jones’s hand (APS), gives them by categories: three from the Drake, the master, surgeon, and purser; eleven from merchant vessels, five masters and their mates and one passenger (undoubtedly Andrew Fallon); and 166 underofficers, warrant officers, and seamen, exclusive of sick and wounded.
