Richmond 18th June 1812—

Sir

We wrote to you on the 9th Inst with a copy of your Sales and Account Current to which we refer you—As the writer is under the necessity of leaving town tomorrow and may possibly be detained longer than he at present proposes, we take the liberty of forwarding you a note for your signature, we leave the amount blank, that you may fill it up with whatever sum may suit your wants—O. Philpotts has let his note lie over, the indorser we understand is good, and promises to pay next week—In haste1 we are with respect

RC (ViU: TJP-ER); in Patrick Gibson’s hand; at foot of text: “Thomas Jefferson Esqre”; endorsed by TJ as received 25 June 1812 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosure not found.

Gibson was forced to take legal action in an effort to obtain payment for TJ’s tobacco purchased by Oakley philpotts. The debt was still outstanding in 1815 (Gibson & Jefferson to TJ, [before 12 Apr. 1812]; TJ to Gibson, 23 Dec. 1814; Gibson to TJ, 3 Jan. 1815).
