Election Writ Issued to Sheriff of Fluvanna County
[Williamsburg] 30 June 1777. George Wythe, Speaker of the House of Delegates, directs Martin Key, Sheriff of Fluvanna co., to summon freeholders on some convenient day to elect “two of the most able and discreet men” of the county and to notify the elected delegates to attend legislature at Williamsburg in October “to consult of such things as may be for the glory of God, and for the honour and prosperity of the commonwealth.”
Tr (Vi). Endorsed in unknown hand: “Fluvanna Writ for electing Delegates. Thomas Napier Wilson M. Cary. Oct. 1777.” Also endorsed in TJ’s hand: “The execution of this writ appears in a certain schedule hereto annexed.” The annexed certification is in the hand of TJ, as are also two certificates of election issued to Napier and Cary respectively; all three documents are in TJ’s hand, though signed by Martin Key, and all are dated 6 Oct. 1777; see petition to divide Albemarle co., under 12 May 1777, above.
