1. Almost unquestionably a brother of Benjamin Hawkins, a North Carolinian who at this time was in the legislature: Richard A. Harrison, Princetonians, 1776–1783 . . . (Princeton, N.J., 1981), pp. 176–7. The brother must have presented JW’s letter, for on the 28th he asked BF, in a one-sentence note, for a pass of some sort that had been promised him: APS.
