Fort Washington [Northwest Territory] Novr 1st 1792

Sir

Conceiving that the novelty of the thing may render it acceptable; I have presumed to offer to you, by the Hands of Capt. Prior, two Kegs of Salted Fish, which were taken in the Big Miami River.1 And, with the most dutiful attachment to your Person, & the highest veneration for your exalted Station I have the Honor to be Your obliged & faithful Soldier & Servant

1. Abner Prior (d. 1800), a New York native and Revolutionary War veteran, had been promoted to captain in the U.S. Army on 2 June 1792 (see GW to the U.S. Senate, 22 Feb. 1793). Prior attended the peace conference that Gen. Rufus Putnam conducted with the Wabash and Illinois Indians in September 1792, and he subsequently accompanied an Indian delegation from this conference to Philadelphia, arriving there on 26 Dec. 1792 (see Knox to the U.S. Senate, 8 Nov. 1792, ASP, Indian Affairs, description begins Walter Lowrie et al., eds. American State Papers. Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States. 38 vols. Washington, D.C., Gales and Seaton, 1832–61. description ends 1:319; Pennsylvania Gazette [Philadelphia] , 2 Jan. 1793). Prior later was wounded at the Battle of Fallen Timbers on 20 Aug. 1794.
