I have the honor to inclose you Returns, of the Clothing on Hand in the Magazine in Philadelphia the 1st Inst: & of the Issues made to that Day since my last Return.1

The Assistant Clothier general having lately made Returns of the state of the Eastern Magazines makes it unnecessary for me to say any thing respecting them at present:2 I have therefore only to add that I expect the Shoes & light Clothing are in Motion from Philadelphia to Morris Town and that I am very respectfully your Excellencys Obedient & ready servant

1Wilkinson enclosed two documents, each with his signature. The first, a “Return of Cloathing on Hand at the Magazine at Philadelphia June 1st 1780,” indicated that there were 421 coats, 283 vests, 1,992 breeches, 2 shirts, 9 hose, 861 shoes, 1,693 overalls, 23 blankets, 3 watch coats, 4 linen frocks, 28 boots, and 39 socks in the magazine. A note initialed by Wilkinson reads: “June 2nd this day recd 975 pr Shoes not included in this return” (DLC:GW).

The second document, a “Return of Cloathing issued from the Magazine at Philadela from 15th April to 1st June 1780,” showed that a total of 917 coats, 1,324 vests, 67 breeches, 3,008 shirts, 161 hose, 3,784 shoes, 1 woolen overall, 6,685 linen overalls, 54 hats, 904 blankets, 8 stocks, 148 boots, and 323 shoe buckles had been issued to the army. Most items went to the Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, and Maryland troops transferred south. Smaller issues went to the Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania troops; Maj. Henry Lee, Jr.’s partisan corps; two independent companies; the artillery artificers; and the Invalid Corps. A few items had been issued as “Contingencies” (DLC:GW; filed with 1 June documents).
